Wooden pallets are nothing but strong and rigid platforms that are usually used to provide a support for various goods that needs to be shipped or transported. It helps in preventing damages that occurs while transporting the goods from one place to another. A huge number of wooden pallets are used every day for several purposes. Many people have a wrong misconception that woods are highly used in paper industry but it is not so. It is highly used for making wooden pallets.
Wooden pallets are highly preferred because of the fact that it provides strong protection and is cost effective. Even though there are many advantages in using wooden pallets, one of the important disadvantages of wooden pallet is that wooden pallets can be affected by pests, termites and bed bugs. The best way to overcome this disadvantage is fumigating the wooden pallets.
Fumigation is the most effective technique used for controlling the pests that affects the pallets. In Fumigation process, the fumigants are released. Fumigants are the chemical vapors that are intended to sterilize pallets or eliminate pests.
Pallets that are made up of raw, untreated woods are not compliant with ISPM 15. The pallets should meet the ISPM 15 and should be certified by them in order to use those pallets to transport the goods or commodities to other countries. Only the goods which are packed with ISPM 15 certification are allowed to pass through the customs check. This is because of the fact that the pallets that are not properly treated may carry some microbial organism that may cause diseases. So it is very import for the companies to ensure that the wooden pallets that are used for exporting the goods are certified by ISPM 15.
Fumigation of pallets helps in treating the commodities or goods with a view to minimize or to eliminate the risks of diseases and pests. This method is found to be very effective. Fumigation will be effective only if a proper fumigant is used for fumigation.
The only fumigant that is permitted by ISPM 15 standards for wood packing materials used in exporting commodities is Methyl Bromide. The ISPM 15 standards related to fumigant Methyl Bromide in the wood packing industry is directly overseen by the National Wooden Pallet and Container Association (NWPCA).
Different types of fumigation methods are utilized for fumigating the solid wood packing material, to meet the ISPM standards. One of the methods of fumigation is to load the container with pallets or other wood packing materials and administer the methyl bromide gas for a specific period of time or to trap the WPM and fumigate them. Wood packing materials can be fumigated individually and can be kept them in an secured area to prevent re-infection of Wood Packing Material until they are needed for packing.
As the problem of pests in wooden pallets is increasing it has become essential to get rid of them in order to overcome the disadvantages of wooden pallets and increase the usage of wooden pallets. Fumigation is of the best and effective method to get rid of the pest or any infection of wooden pallets.
